The Vein Treatment Procedure
Your treatment will take approximately 15-60 minutes, depending on the areas you wish to treat. You will be given a pair of safety glasses which must remain on while undergoing treatment. An ultrasound gel will be applied to the treatment area which assists in the gliding of the handpiece prior to a “shot” being performed. A series of shots will be performed tracing the line of each vein.
The treatment uses the Nd:yag laser with the copper tip to pre-cool the skin where the the vein is located then we fire a “shot” of light. The pulse of light will selectively treat the target of hemoglobin (chromophore) within the vein without causing thermal damage to the surrounding tissue. The laser light is absorbed by hemoglobin in the veins and the heat produced causes photocoagulation. This heat is transferred to the vessel wall which affects the collagen and ultimately helps to destroy the vessel and prevent regrowth.
With each shot you will briefly feel a warm sensation and a slight sting (like a rubber band snap) as the light energy is absorbed by the target. This indicates that the treatment is working – in the case of tiny veins they literally disappear as soon as the shot is fired.
CoolGlide treatments are predominately undertaken as part of a series of treatments to achieve improvements (some small veins may only require 1 treatment). Usually, 2–3 treatments, will be sufficient to see results, treatments are spaced at least six weeks apart.
Preparing For Laser Vein Treatments
To ensure you achieve the best results, we recommend the following to our patients.
- Don't use active skincare or makeup on the day of your treatment.
- Avoid tanning, including indoor tanning and or self-tanners for at least two weeks (ideally a month) prior to treatment.
- Some medications or supplements may increase the risk of bruising. Consult your physician and be sure to discuss your current medications with our doctor before scheduling treatment.
- Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin for one or two weeks prior to treatment (waxing, depilatories, etc.)
- Notify us of any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.
- If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, you may need an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment.
After Vein Treatment
To ensure optimal, long-lasting results, we recommend that patients follow our post-treatment advice. Aftercare for a Coolglide vein therapy is minimal but still very important. Patients should do the following:
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 24–48 hours.
- Ensure you wear a high-SPF 30 or 50+ broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen for the next few days following your treatment.
- You may experience some bruising, redness and swelling. This is common and with resolve with time.
- Avoid activities that cause excess heat and sweating like exercise, hot tub or a sauna session for a few days.
- Avoid using skin care products that contain active ingredients for 24-48 hours (Products containing acids, benzoyl peroxide, and other potentially irritating ingredients.)
