How to Keep Skin Blotch-Free and Glowing After Pigmentation Treatment

Woman who recently had IPL places her hands on her cheeks and smiles, pleased with her results If you’ve just completed pigmentation treatment with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), you’ve already taken a huge step toward achieving clearer, more luminous skin.

At Cedar Grove Aesthetics, our medical director, Dr. John D. Rudd, and dedicated team are recognized for their expertise in light-based therapies, including IPL. We utilize the most advanced technology for IPL photofacials.

Here’s what you need to know about protecting your results after IPL treatment for age spots or other unwanted pigmentation.

What IPL Can Do For You

IPL works beneath the surface to reduce discoloration caused by sun damage, age spots, and uneven tone. It can also effectively resolve vascular lesions, like tiny broken blood vessels on the cheeks.

Within about a week after an IPL treatment, pigmented lesions typically start shedding, revealing clear skin.

To maintain that beautiful clear skin, consistent care and a few essential habits make all the difference.

Protect Skin From the Sun Every Day

After the IPL treatment, your skin becomes more sensitive to UV exposure. Even a brief time in the sun without protection may trigger new pigment changes.

Always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply it every two hours when outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses also provide extra defense against UV rays.

Avoid tanning beds completely, as they can reverse your results and impede the skin healing process.

Keep Skin Hydrated and Nourished

Healthy, hydrated skin is more resilient and heals faster. Use a gentle cleanser and apply a high-quality moisturizer in the morning and at night to lock in hydration. Look for products with hyaluronic acid or ceramides to support the skin barrier.

Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can also help maintain natural elasticity and glow.

Avoid Irritating Your Skin

Immediately after IPL, skip exfoliating acids, retinol, and harsh scrubs for at least a week. These products can cause redness or disrupt the skin’s renewal process.

Allow any darkened pigment spots to flake off naturally without picking or rubbing.

Maintain Results With Touch-Up Sessions

Over time, new pigmentation can develop due to sun exposure or the natural aging process. Periodic maintenance IPL sessions can help keep your complexion clear and even.
